Salicylate free toothpaste

Following my recent round-up of salicylate-free cosmetics, a reader asked about salicylate-free toothpastes — notoriously difficult to obtain, not least because mint / menthol are extremely high in salicylates — so here is a list of those I’ve found.

Oranurse
Their Unflavored Toothpaste was originally designed for young people with autism who can be averse to strong flavours, but it has also found favour with those with salicylate sensitivity. The ingredients are just hydrated silica, glycerine, sorbitol, xylitol, cellulose gum, titanium dioxide and sodium benzoate, and you can find it for sale on most Amazon sites internationally.

Chitodent
This is a German fluoride-free toothpaste containing chitosan, a carbohydrate compound which is said to be anti-bacterial, anti-plaque and anti-caries. Note that chitosan is made from chitin, which derived from the shells of shrimp and other crustaceans, so this product is not vegetarian. Read more about Chitodent via the German website here. It appears that the 75ml tube (pictured right) contains different ingredients to the 100ml tube, which contains fennel (which contains salicylates). So ensure you try the 75ml. Stockists are difficult to come by. Online you will find some German-language sites from central Europe which you may be able to navigate. Check ingredients and avoid any containing “Foeniculum Vulgare fruit oil” which is the fennel oil.

Jack N’ Jill
This kids’ brand have a Natural ‘Flavor Free’ Toothpaste which is not only salicylate-free, but also free of SLS, artificial preservatives, gluten and colorants. You can order it internationally through Amazon, or directly through their UK website, or their Australia website.

Alfree
An Australian toothpaste, also free from fluoride, flavourings, and SLS. It is preserved with a parabens (methylparaben), which is safe, but some individuals, especially women, prefer to avoid. Other ingredients are water, calcium carbonate, sorbitol, glycerin, silica, sodium cocoyl isethionate, cellulose gum, sodium magnesium silicate. Find it on their Australian site here.

Squigle
Their Tooth Builder Sensitive Toothpaste (right) is fluoride-free and flavor-free. It is vegetarian but not vegan as it contains a cows’ milk derived ingredient (lactoferrin, an anti-microbial). They also do an Enamel Saver Toothpaste, which contains mint flavouring, so ensure you choose the Tooth Builder. You can order through a selection of outlets in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. You can also find the brand on Amazon.

Cleure
This brand of salicylate-free or low-salicylate products do several toothpastes. For salicylate sensitives, they recommend only their Original Without Flavour Toothpaste.

Additionally, for those following the Guaifinesin Protocol, their mint-free flavoured options are suitable, even though they contain trace amounts of salicylates — found in the artificial flavourings used in these products — that are insufficient to ‘block’ the protocol. They are fluoride-free, SLS-free, gluten-free, parabens-free and vegan. Ingredients are baking soda, glycerin, water, dicalcium phosphate, xylitol, xanthan gum and sodium lauryl sarcosinate. Amazon US sell a few of the products, including the flavor-free. They also offer dental floss.

Andrea Rose Personal Basics
Used to have their own dental products, including vanilla flavour and lemon-lime flavour toothpastes, but these appear to have been discontinued. I’ll update this page when I find out more. They stock the Squigle Tooth Builder product, however. Find them here.
